The National Capital Region Transport Corporation has submitted a draft Detailed Project Report to the Haryana Government. This is a long-anticipated corridor for the Gurgaon to Noida Regional Rapid Transit System. The proposed high-speed railway link is intended to transform inter-city travel in the National Capital Region by providing a more efficient and faster alternative to road-based transportation.
According to the draft DPR, the corridor will run entirely from IFFCO Chowk, Gurgaon, to Surajpur, Greater Noida. It will bypass Delhi. The project, estimated at Rs 15,000 crores, is seen as an important part of the Center's connectivity blueprint that links Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi to the upcoming Noida International Airport.
Plan a strategic route and station
According to the proposed alignment, the RRTS will begin at IFFCO Chowk and pass through Sector 54 of Gurgaon. It will then enter Faridabad via Bata Chowk. The corridor would then move along the Sector 85-86 junction, continue on towards Noida Sector 168, before ending at Surajpur. The route proposed includes six stations designed to ease pressure on existing infrastructure and facilitate city-to-city rapid travel.
The RRTS will reduce the travel time from IFFCO Chowk in Delhi to Faridabad to just 22 minutes. Travel to Noida is also expected to be shortened to 38 minutes. This dramatic reduction in travel times could change commuter patterns throughout the NCR and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
Rail Network in the NCR
The Gurgaon to Noida corridor is the third RRTS Project in Haryana. Two other corridors -- Delhi-Gurgaon-Manesar-Bawal and Delhi-Panipat-Karnal -- have already received approval from the Public Investment Board and are awaiting final clearance from the Union Cabinet.
The 93-km Delhi to Bawal corridor will cost approximately Rs32,000 crore. Meanwhile, the 136 km Delhi to Karnal corridor is estimated to cost Rs 33,000 crore. Both corridors will originate at Sarai Kale Kha, which is the terminal station of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS. This corridor is already completed and waiting for commissioning.
The Centre and the Uttar Pradesh Government are also evaluating options to build an RRTS connecting Sarai Kale Khan, or Ghaziabad, directly to Jewar Airport. The alignment of other corridors could be changed based on the feasibility results to ensure seamless integration.
According to the current proposal, the Gurgaon-Noida corridor would connect with the Delhi-Bawal RRTS via IFFCO Chowk. A station is also planned near the IGI Airport. Surajpur, on the eastern end of the corridor, is expected to be an interchange station for the proposed Ghaziabad - Jewar RRTS, strengthening regional connectivity.

The debate in Gurgaon is Elevated vs Underground
The NCRTC's plan for the Gurgaon to Noida RRTS is an elevated corridor. However, the Haryana Government has expressed concerns, especially in the densely populated areas of Gurgaon. State officials suggested that the RRTS should be built underground, citing land costs, dense urban development, and long-term planning concerns.
A high-level meeting was held to discuss the issue in detail. Officials from NCRTC attended, as did officials from Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran(HSVP), Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority(FMDA), Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority(GMDA), Gurugram Metro Rail Limited ("GMRL"), and Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation.
Senior Haryana officials claimed that a high-speed elevated corridor through Gurgaon, with just one or two stations, would be of limited benefit to commuters in the area. They warned that this infrastructure could limit future road upgrades and expansion.
A senior official stated that an underground route would eliminate this problem and preserve valuable surface land for future needs of the city. He added that Gurgaon’s arterial roads were already saturated, and in the coming years, they will need flyovers and multi-level junctions as well as pedestrian facilities and integrated bus systems.
Concerns Over Urban Impact
Officials expressed concern that the elevated RRTS tracks on major roads might hinder future vertical expansion. According to the government of the state, building elevated viaducts will not only hinder future infrastructure upgrades but also cause traffic disruptions during construction.
An official stated that an elevated structure would permanently restrict surface-level changes and disrupt traffic for many years, highlighting the need for urban flexibility over short-term savings.
Officials at the NCRTC, however, maintain that discussions are only in a preliminary phase. "We submitted the draft DPR to all stakeholders and asked for feedback. "All suggestions, including alignments and construction methods, are being evaluated," said an NCRTC official.
Need for more stations in Gurgaon
The number of stations in Gurgaon is another major topic of discussion. Urban mobility experts warned that a small number of stations would undermine the corridor's goal of reducing private car usage.
Ashok Bhattacharjee, a consultant in urban mobility planning, said that the decision between elevated and underground systems is not based on technology, but rather cost, land availability, and urban context.
"Technology does not constrain us. The real challenge is right-of-way availability and costs. Both elevated and underground systems can be equally effective from a city-to-city connectivity perspective," Bhattacharjee stated.
He stressed, however, that mass transit systems must be designed for people and not just to provide fast movement between cities. If stations are few and far away from where people work and live, commuters won't switch from their private vehicles. "A station with a catchment area that is only 3-5km will not be able to attract enough riders," he said.
Transforming NCR Mobility
Despite their disagreements, planners are in agreement that the Gurgaon to Noida RRTS has the potential of being a game-changer for the NCR. The corridor, which offers fast, reliable, and high-capacity transportation, could reduce travel times, ease congestion, and lower pollution levels in the region.
The final alignment and strategy for construction are expected to change as feedback from state agencies, urban planners, and other stakeholders is incorporated in the DPR. The project, once approved, will be another important milestone in NCR’s journey to an integrated regional transport network that is future-ready.
The RRTS corridor will not only provide faster travel between Gurgaon and Noida but also a fundamental change in the way the region is moved.
